2025 SSCE External: NECO records 31.7% rise in exam malpractice

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has recorded a slight increase in cases of examination malpractice in the recently concluded 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External.
Releasing the results in Minna, Niger State, the Registrar of the Council, Professor Dantani Wushishi, disclosed that 9,016 candidates were booked for various forms of malpractice, compared to 6,160 cases recorded during the 2024 examination, representing an increase of 31.7 per cent.
Professor Wushishi also revealed that five supervisors were recommended for blacklisting for aiding and abetting examination malpractice.
The affected supervisors include two from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and one each from Kano, Adamawa and Ondo states.
The registrar said 96,979 candidates registered for the examination, out of which 95,160 candidates eventually sat for it. Of this number, 50,785 candidates, representing 53.36 per cent, were male, while 44,375 candidates, representing 46.63 per cent, were female.
On performance, Professor Wushishi stated that 73,167 candidates, representing 78.82 per cent, obtained credit and above in English Language, while 85,256 candidates, representing 91.35 per cent, recorded credit and above in Mathematics. He added that 82,082 candidates, representing 86.26 per cent, achieved five credits and above, irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.
The examination, he noted, was conducted for candidates seeking the requisite qualifications for admission into various higher institutions. He further disclosed that the results were released 52 days after the conclusion of the last written paper.
