Officials of the Directorate of Students Support
Services of the National Universities Commission (NUC), recently visited the
Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, (IBBUL), in Niger state, to
evaluate and assess the quality of infrastructural facilities and support
services made available at the institution to enhance learning and other
academic activities.

Muhammad Nasir Maiturare, informed the delegation that necessary arrangements
and plans were already concluded to ensure the inspection was hitch-free and

(administration), Professor Abu-Kasim Adamu, reiterated management’s readiness

and support services for students at Nigerian universities is another component
of assessment by the NUC.

The purpose of the exercise, he said, is to ensure
balance between academic standard and support services provided by
universities, besides the normal accreditation programme.

“Among other things, the fundamental essence why

universities is to ensure that quality facilities and support services are
provided for our students. The exercise is geared towards making the learning
environment in our tertiary institutions more friendly, tranquil and conducive,”
he said.

Adamu explained that the scope of the exercise include
counseling and human development centre services, health services, student
affairs, entrepreneurship and innovation services, sports and academic
planning.

Other areas to be assessed are examination

transportation and communication facilities, together with information and

Similarly, a team of internal auditors from the office
of the Auditor-General of the Federation, were at the school to inquire on the
manner funds released under the NEEDS Assessment intervention projects of the federal
government to tertiary institutions, were judiciously utilised.

“The amazing discoveries we saw as to how NEEDS funds
were prudently utilized are incredible. The projects you have executed with the
funds will definitely help to enhance teaching, research and learning. But
above all, what the management has done with the NEEDS fund would assist the
school access more funds from FG, through the Ministry of Education,” said Mrs.

In a remark, DVC (administration) stated that the
school administrative board has zero tolerance for financial impropriety, hence
will always ensure that funds accessed or earmarked for developmental projects
are not mismanaged or diverted for other purposes.

out groundbreaking research activities for oil and gas exploration at Bida and
Sokoto basins.

Assuring that by the time the research activities and

Dr. Baru, pointed out that it was as a result of the
efforts of the school in that direction that motivated the corporation to endow
the first NNPC professorial chair at IBBUL.

He observed that the relationship between the corporation
and the university is filled with ‘beautiful’ memories, saying it is one that
would endure owing to the seriousness of the institution in pursuit of its
