Sokoto State governor, Dr Ahmad Aliyu will mark his one-year anniversary in office on May 29, 2023. This is a milestone that provided an opportunity to reflect on his achievements and challenges faced during his first year as the executive governor and chief security officer of the caliphate.
When Dr Aliyu assumed office, he inherited a state facing numerous developmental challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, poor healthcare, and a struggling economy. However, he hit the ground running, unveiling an ambitious agenda to transform Sokoto State into a hub of economic growth and prosperity.
One of the governor’s landmarks in his first year is the significant progress made in the area of infrastructure development. He embarked on an aggressive road construction programme, rehabilitating and building new roads across the state to enhance connectivity and facilitate economic growth. The reconstruction of the Sokoto-Kebbi-Makera road, a critical link connecting Sokoto to neighbouring states, is a testament to his administration’s commitment to improving the state’s infrastructure and consequently living standards of his people.
Dr Aliyu also made significant strides in the healthcare sector, recognizing the importance of quality healthcare in ensuring the wellbeing of citizens. He upgraded several healthcare facilities, including the Sokoto Specialist Hospital and brought about reforms towards improving healthcare delivery, such as the provision of medical equipment and the recruitment of additional healthcare personnel.
In addition to these achievements, the governor demonstrated a strong commitment to education, as he had promised during the electioneering. He acknowledges the vital role of education in shaping the future of the state. He therefore launched a number of programmes aimed at improving access to quality education, including the renovation and construction of new schools, the provision of educational materials, and the training of teachers.
The governor’s efforts to revamp the state’s economy have also yielded positive results. He implemented initiatives to support Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), recognizing their potential to drive economic growth and create jobs. The establishment of the Sokoto State Investment Promotion Agency is a notable example of his administration’s efforts to attract investment and promote economic development for an enhanced revenue generation.
Despite these achievements, Dr Aliyu’s first year in office was not without challenges. The state faced security concerns, including banditry and kidnapping, which required the governor’s prompt attention. He responded by launching a comprehensive security strategy, which included the deployment of additional security personnel and the establishment of a security task force to combat criminal activities.
Dr Aliyu’s 365 days in office have been marked by significant achievements and challenges. His administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and economic growth has set the state on a path of sustainable progress and prosperity. As he embarks on his second year in office, the governor remains focused on delivering on his campaign promises and building a brighter future as he creates enabling environment for the people of Sokoto State to do their business.
Overall, Governor Aliyu’s first year in office has demonstrated his commitment to transforming Sokoto State into a hub of economic growth and prosperity, and his achievements provide a solid foundation for future progress, bearing in mind the important role of education as a vehicle of societal transformation.
Indeed, Dr Ahmad has produced a template of social contract governance worthy of emulation by his contemporaries.
