Maikudi charges UniAbuja students to be upright, dedicated to studies

Students of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) have been reminded that the institution will not tolerate acts of indiscipline, truancy, cultism and deliberate disobedience to constituted authorities from any member of the university community.
Successful students were also advised to see their admission as a rare privilege and become serious with their studies considering that over 38,000 applicants vied for the 7,794 slots available at the university for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The immediate past Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi, who gave the warning during the matriculation ceremony of newly admitted students at the weekend in Abuja said the rules and regulations governing the conduct of students in the university are documented and made available to every student for them to study and acquaint themselves with the guiding rules.
Maikudi urged the students to use their official handbook as a daily guide because ignorance of the law cannot be an excuse for any unbecoming conduct or infractions in any organized system.
“The University of Abuja has zero tolerance for all acts of indiscipline including obnoxious acts such as cultism, sexual harassment, examination misconduct, and squatting in hostels among others.
“Accordingly, I urge you to start right from this moment, to remain upright and serious in your conduct and studies respectively. This is to enable you to justify the confidence and trust reposed in you by the university, your parents, and guardians, and society at large.
“It is worthy to note that students can study and graduate and degrees awarded to them by the university based on character and learning. And that degrees awarded can be withdrawn by the university at any time the recipient is deemed to be unworthy of it.
“This means that as you are matriculated today, your engagement with the University of Abuja is a life-long affair that should be nurtured and sustained with the required diligence and discipline,” Maikudi said.
The VC urged the students to freely mingle and treat one another as brothers and sisters in line with the core values of unity and scholarship of the institution.
She pointed out that the “Abuja university community truly reflects the Nigerian federation as all sections of the country are represented in both staff and student composition. Hence, it is incumbent on us to promote corporate harmony by avoiding actions capable of polarising us along the fault lines of religion, ethnicity, and political agenda, among others.
“Let me warmly congratulate all the new students being matriculated for their moment of glory being witnessed today. I salute your courage and steadfastness in choosing the university of Abuja as your first choice and working hard to gain admission into the highly sought institution considering that over 38,000 applicants vied for the 7,794 available slots.
“I assure you that you will not regret your choice once you put in the necessary hard work in your studies and discipline in your conduct that is required to excel and graduate from the University of Abuja.”
