Gov Namadi’s bold vision for a prosperous Jigawa State

In an era of knowledge economy where governance is increasingly measured by impact and foresight, Gov Malam Umar A. Namadi of Jigawa State stands tall as a leader with a clear sense of purpose, strategy, and humanity. His administration’s recent approval of over ₦2.5 billion worth of projects spanning education, agriculture, energy, and financial inclusion is not only a demonstration of prudent governance but a bold reflection of visionary leadership that places people at the centre of his agenda.
Jigawa, a state once synonymous with rural deprivation and limited infrastructure, is gradually being transformed into a model of people-focused development under Gov Namadi’s stewardship. His approach to governance is methodical, built on evidence, consultation, and measurable outcomes.
The recent State Executive Council approvals offer a window into the governor’s development philosophy: invest in human capital, strengthen productive sectors, and lay sustainable foundations for economic resilience.
Education: Building minds, securing the future
At the heart of the governor’s vision lies education. The approval of ₦869.6 million for the renovation of seven model Tsangaya schools, the construction of 30 recitation halls, and 30 reading shades represents a decisive step in integrating traditional Islamic education into the mainstream learning ecosystem. This policy recognises the importance of Islamic learning while addressing the long-standing neglect of the Almajiri system. Gov Namadi is not just providing infrastructure, he is restoring dignity to thousands of pupils who were once marginalised.
In addition, the allocation of ₦1.54 billion for bursary allowances to 22,388 students across 83 tertiary institutions nationwide speaks volumes about his belief in equal opportunity. For many Jigawa students studying outside the state, this lifeline will not only ease financial hardship but also inspire academic excellence. Education remains the greatest equaliser, and by investing in it, Governor Namadi is investing in the future workforce and leadership of Jigawa State.
Furthermore, the ₦835 million committed to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) underscores the administration’s pragmatic understanding that not all youths must wait for white-collar jobs. By equipping young men and women with employable skills in trades and crafts, the state is unlocking self-employment potential, reducing dependency, and strengthening its local economy. Jigawa is showing that development is not about handouts; it’s about empowerment.
Agriculture: Securing food, strengthening livelihoods
Agriculture remains the lifeblood of Jigawa’s economy. Gov Namadi’s decision to subsidise fertilizer through an allocation of ₦396 million, covering 12,000 bags of NPK fertilizer, is a thoughtful intervention at a time when smallholder farmers face rising production costs. Selling these inputs at ₦33,000 per bag is not just a subsidy, it is a signal that his administration understands the plight of the common farmer and is ready to support the rural economy with concrete measures.
Beyond the numbers, this policy ensures that food production remains steady, and food security, a key national priority, is enhanced. When farmers thrive, communities prosper. Gov Namadi’s agricultural strategy aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, but more importantly, it is tailored to the unique realities of Jigawa’s agrarian landscape.
Energy: Powering progress through innovation
In today’s world, development is impossible without energy. Gov Namadi’s approval of ₦733.1 million for technical audit and planning of rooftop solar installations under the State Interventions Solar Solution (SI-SS) Programme is nothing short of groundbreaking. By targeting schools, hospitals, and other critical public facilities, the governor is positioning Jigawa as a pioneer of renewable energy transition in Northern Nigeria.
This initiative reflects foresight. While many states still grapple with unreliable electricity supply, Jigawa is embracing sustainability and innovation. The SI-SS programme will reduce reliance on fossil fuels, cut energy costs, and ensure uninterrupted services in essential institutions. It is a model that other states should emulate, a practical step towards achieving Nigeria’s energy transition goals.
Financial Inclusion: Banking for the grassroots
One of the least discussed but most transformative aspects of the governor’s recent approvals is the plan to establish five microfinance banks across Birniwa, Gujungu (Taura), Guri, Gwaram, and Kaugama LGAs. For decades, access to credit and formal banking services has remained a major challenge in rural Jigawa.
Gov Namadi’s initiative to extend financial infrastructure to these communities will empower small businesses, women, and farmers, fostering entrepreneurship and local productivity.
Financial inclusion is not a luxury, it is a necessity for economic growth. With these microfinance banks, Jigawa will gradually close the gap between rural citizens and financial institutions, thereby stimulating grassroots economic activity and reducing poverty.
A governor with a blueprint for transformation
Gov Namadi’s developmental priorities are neither random nor politically driven. They reflect a deep understanding of the state’s challenges and a structured roadmap for transformation. His policies are people-oriented, sustainable, and inclusive, touching the core sectors that matter most to ordinary citizens.
