Why NELFUND extends 2025/2026 application portal

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has approved an extension of its student loan application portal for institutions that formally requested additional time to complete applications for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Strategic Communications at NELFUND, Mrs Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, who explained that the extension is strictly for institutions that submitted official requests to the Fund to enable their eligible students conclude the application process on the NELFUND Student Loan Portal.
According to the statement, the decision followed appeals from some participating institutions seeking additional time to ensure that qualified students who were yet to complete their submissions are not excluded from the programme.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to expanding access to the student loan scheme for eligible Nigerian students.
“NELFUND remains committed to ensuring that eligible students across participating institutions have the opportunity to access the student loan programme,” Sawyerr said.
He noted that the extension demonstrates the Fund’s responsiveness to stakeholders and its determination to ensure that no qualified student is denied the opportunity to benefit from the initiative due to administrative or timing challenges.
NELFUND therefore encouraged all eligible students in the affected institutions to take advantage of the extension and complete their applications through the official NELFUND Student Loan Portal.
The Fund reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and the delivery of sustainable student financing solutions aimed at removing financial barriers to higher education in Nigeria.
