ADC chairmanship candidate decries poor accountability in FCT Area Councils, promises transparent governance

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Chairmanship Candidate for Kuje Area Council, Chief Stephen Nabai, has expressed concern over what he described as inadequate transparency and accountability in the management of public funds across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Chief Nabai said it was important for area council chairmen to give regular accounts of the funds they receive from the federal allocation, stressing that the money belongs to the people and should be used strictly for their welfare.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Nabai emphasised that the public deserves to know how much is received monthly and how such funds are spent. According to him, “Transparency and accountability are key elements of good governance. When there is no openness in financial management, it creates room for suspicion and weakens public trust in leadership.”
He urged serving council chairmen to make details of their monthly allocations and expenditures public to ensure that residents can follow how government resources are being utilised for community development.
Nabai, who has previously served as a member of the Joint Accounts Committee (JAC) in the FCT, explained that local government funds are meant for the benefit of the people, not for private use. “At JAC meetings, allocations are released to all area councils. It is expected that chairmen go back to their councils and report to the people on how the funds are being applied,” he said.
He added that as a candidate, he is committed to changing the current system of governance by promoting openness, participatory budgeting, and regular public briefings. “By the grace of God, if we are elected, we will run an inclusive administration that values transparency. People will know what comes in, what goes out, and how it is used. Accountability is not optional; it is a right of the people,” Nabai declared.
Outlining his priorities, the ADC candidate said his administration would focus on improving the economy, healthcare, education, and security, while also empowering women and young people. “The grassroots population is the backbone of local government. Unfortunately, they are often excluded from decision-making and benefit-sharing. Our government will bring them on board by providing the basic amenities and opportunities they deserve,” he stated.
Chief Nabai also appealed to residents to participate actively in the electoral process and defend their votes peacefully during the forthcoming FCT Area Council elections scheduled for February 16, 2026. He called on all political parties to play by the rules and ensure that the elections are free, fair, and credible.
He reaffirmed his party’s commitment to issue-based campaigns and peaceful coexistence, noting that development at the grassroots would only be possible in an environment of trust and transparency.
