Former Katsina Governor receives Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Administration
The University of Port Harcourt has conferred an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Science in Public Administration (DSc Honoris Causa) on the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and former Governor of Katsina State, Rt Hon Aminu Bello Masari.
The conferment, according to a statement by TETFund’s Director of Public Affairs, Abdulmumin Oniyangi, on Sunday, was in recognition of his distinguished service to the nation and unwavering commitment to the advancement of education. The award was given during the university’s 35th Convocation Ceremony, which also marked the 50th anniversary of the institution’s establishment.
The event drew dignitaries from across the country, including members of the academic community, government officials, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders, who gathered to celebrate the university’s milestone and honour exceptional individuals who have contributed to national development.
As part of the convocation programme, Rt Hon Masari delivered the convocation lecture titled “The Role of Universities in Nation-Building.” In his address, he underscored the pivotal role of universities as engines of knowledge creation, research, and innovation. He emphasised the need for Nigerian universities to align academic learning with real-world problem-solving, advocating for stronger collaboration between higher institutions, government agencies, and the private sector.
“Universities must go beyond awarding degrees; they must serve as catalysts for economic growth, good governance, and social transformation,” Masari stated.
The former governor also called for a renewed focus on producing graduates who are not only intellectually equipped but also practically skilled to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development aspirations.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, while presenting the honorary degree, described Rt Hon Masari as a statesman whose career has been marked by integrity, commitment to public service, and an abiding passion for educational reform. He noted that Masari’s leadership at TETFund has significantly impacted Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape, particularly through improved funding and infrastructural development.
This recognition, the university said, aligns with its tradition of honouring individuals whose contributions have helped shape national progress and human capital development.
Rt Hon Masari served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007 and Governor of Katsina State from 2015 to 2023. His current role as Chairman of TETFund’s Board of Trustees continues to position him at the forefront of policy implementation and educational advancement in Nigeria.
