Gov Ahmed Aliyu: Leading by vision, foresight, compassion

The recent intervention by the Sokoto State Government in Isa and Sabon Birni Local Government Areas marks yet another testament to the leadership qualities of Governor Ahmed Aliyu. By disbursing a staggering N293 million alongside 1,540 bags of assorted food items to victims of bandit attacks and internally displaced persons (IDPs), Director of Media and Publicity, Sokoto State, Abubakar Bawa, on Friday said the Governor has demonstrated that governance, at its very core, is about people and service.At a time when insecurity continues to plague many communities across the nation, he said ⁶the governor’s prompt response not only reflects compassion but also foresight in tackling both the humanitarian and security dimensions of the crisis. His actions show that he recognises the twin responsibilities of government: providing immediate succour for victims and addressing the root of insecurity in the long term.In Isa Local Government Area, where families have endured unimaginable loss, the governor did not merely extend words of condolence; he matched sympathy with tangible action. Each of the 65 bereaved families received N2 million and five bags of rice, while injured victims were also given financial support and food items. Beyond these direct interventions, N20 million and 1,200 bags of food were provided to the IDPs who now face the hardship of displacement. This brought the total support in Isa to N151.25 million and 1,240 bags of food items, an extraordinary commitment that has brought hope to hundreds of households.Similarly, in Sabon Birni, Governor Aliyu’s benevolence was felt in equal measure. Sixty-one families of those killed were given N2 million each and five bags of rice, while displaced persons in the LGA received N20 million and 1,200 bags of food. Altogether, his government disbursed N122 million and 1,300 bags of food in Sabon Birni. These interventions underline the Governor’s fairness and balance in treating all affected communities with equal concern.What makes Governor Aliyu’s approach particularly laudable is his ability to link humanitarian relief with decisive policy direction. During his visit, he announced his intention to forward a bill to the State House of Assembly prescribing stiff punishments for informants aiding bandits. In identifying the “informants’ syndrome” as a central factor fuelling insecurity, the Governor displayed the kind of foresight that marks a true statesman. By seeking to cut off the lifeline that enables criminals to thrive, he has shown that his fight against insecurity goes beyond rhetoric.In addition to punitive measures, the Governor also appealed for the active cooperation of citizens, urging communities to remain vigilant and share intelligence with security agencies. This blend of community engagement and legislative action highlights a holistic vision — one that empowers citizens while strengthening the hand of government.Governor Aliyu’s achievements in security thus far should not be overlooked. Since assuming office, his administration has distributed over 180 patrol vehicles to security forces, supported the operationalisation of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Sokoto, restored and increased allowances for personnel deployed in volatile zones, and facilitated the construction of a military base in Illela. These initiatives are not the work of a leader who waits to be compelled by circumstances; rather, they are the proactive steps of a man determined to safeguard his people and restore peace.The significance of these efforts extends beyond Isa and Sabon Birni. They symbolise a renewed social contract between government and the governed. Citizens of Sokoto are being reassured that their government sees their pain, understands their fears, and is committed to alleviating both. This is the essence of good governance — leadership that is not detached from the plight of its people.Moreover, the Governor’s personal presence in the affected communities cannot be underestimated. By visiting the victims, offering condolences, and directly supervising the distribution of relief, he has projected empathy, humility, and accessibility. These are qualities that endear leaders to the people and strengthen the trust upon which effective governance is built.In their remarks, the Chairmen of Isa and Sabon Birni LGAs were right to commend Governor Aliyu for his care and concern. Their voices echoed the gratitude of countless families who, in their darkest moments, found the State standing firmly by their side. It is through such gestures that a government strengthens unity, fosters resilience, and rekindles hope in communities scarred by violence.It is also worth highlighting the Governor’s spiritual appeal to the people of Sokoto to intensify prayers for divine intervention. In a society where faith occupies a central place, this call demonstrates his cultural sensitivity and recognition of the moral fabric of the state. By blending practical governance with moral exhortation, Governor Aliyu has struck a balance that resonates deeply with the people.As insecurity continues to challenge the nation, Sokoto’s example under Governor Ahmed Aliyu stands out as a beacon of responsive leadership. His combination of humanitarian relief, strategic security support, legislative foresight, and grassroots engagement paints the portrait of a leader who is not only visionary but also genuinely in love with his people.At a time when many Nigerians yearn for leaders who can inspire confidence and demonstrate empathy, Sokoto has in Ahmed Aliyu a Governor who is charting a path of hope.
