The Federal Government has moved closer to admitting the pioneer cohort of 100 cadets into the Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences (AFCOM-HS) following its listing on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the development as a significant milestone in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at strengthening education, healthcare delivery and national security.

AFCOM-HS was established to develop specialised medical personnel for the Armed Forces and strengthen military healthcare delivery through professional training in medicine, nursing and other related health disciplines.

Located within the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, the college is preparing to admit its pioneer cohort of 100 cadets after securing approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for Medicine and Surgery, leading to the award of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), and Nursing Science, leading to the Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc).

Alausa said the institution would provide specialised training for doctors, nurses and other health professionals to address critical manpower needs and improve healthcare services for military personnel.

He noted that the college would combine medical education with military officer development, equipping cadets with clinical competence, professional ethics and leadership skills required to serve effectively in the Armed Forces.

He said the initiative represents another step in the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda for education, supported by the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
The minister described AFCOM-HS as a pioneering institution in Nigeria, designed from inception to train military cadets in medicine, nursing and related health disciplines.

He commended the Minister of Defence, Lt-Gen. Chris Musa; the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle; the Armed Forces leadership; and the Technical Working Group chaired by Brig-Gen. Dr Idris Babatunde Solebo for their contributions to establishing the institution.

Alausa also acknowledged the roles of JAMB, the NUC and relevant professional regulatory bodies in advancing the college’s establishment and securing the necessary regulatory approvals.

He reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to academic oversight, quality assurance and collaboration with regulatory agencies to ensure that the institution meets the required educational standards.

Prospective applicants have been advised to consult the official AFCOM-HS and JAMB channels for information on admission requirements, application procedures, military selection criteria and admission dates.

The Federal Ministry of Education said the college was expected to contribute to developing specialised medical manpower, improving military healthcare services and strengthening Nigeria’s national health challenges..
