Gov Aliyu’s renewed resolve against banditry in Sokoto State

The announcement by Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, on the introduction of new initiatives to curb banditry marks a significant moment in the state’s long and arduous struggle against insecurity. Coming at a time when many communities are yearning for lasting peace, the Governor’s message conveys reassurance, determination, and a renewed sense of urgency in confronting a menace that has for years disrupted lives and livelihoods.
According to a statement signed by the Director General, Media and Publicity to the Sokoto State Government, Abubakar Bawa, the Governor made these remarks during the 17th Regular State Executive Council (SEC) meeting—also the final meeting of the year 2025. Beyond the formal setting, the substance of the Governor’s address reflected a leadership acutely aware of the gravity of the security challenges facing the state and the need for decisive, well-coordinated action.
Banditry has remained a persistent threat across parts of Sokoto State, particularly in at least 13 local government areas. Entire communities have borne the brunt through loss of lives, displacement of families, disruption of farming and economic activities, and an enduring atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. In such circumstances, the Governor’s consistent emphasis on security since assuming office deserves recognition. His administration has repeatedly stressed that no meaningful development can take root where insecurity prevails, and that peace and safety are the bedrock upon which all progress must stand.
One of the most notable aspects of Governor Aliyu’s latest declaration is the renewed focus on enhanced intelligence gathering. In contemporary security operations, intelligence remains the backbone of success. Criminal groups often thrive in environments where information flow is weak and coordination among stakeholders is poor. By prioritising intelligence as a central strategy in combating banditry, the Sokoto State Government is aligning itself with globally accepted best practices. This shift signals a move away from purely reactive measures towards proactive and preventive strategies capable of dismantling criminal networks before they strike.
Equally important is the Governor’s acknowledgement of the positive results already being recorded through collaboration with security agencies. Such an admission is significant, as it helps to reinforce public confidence and demonstrates that the resources and sacrifices being committed are yielding results. The continued provision of logistics and operational support to security agencies further underscores the administration’s commitment to practical action rather than mere rhetoric. Security personnel cannot operate effectively without adequate equipment, mobility, and welfare support, and the state government’s role in strengthening their capacity is both necessary and commendable.
Another key theme in the Governor’s address is the call for collective responsibility. By appealing to residents to continue supporting the government and security agencies, Governor Aliyu recognises that security is not solely the responsibility of the state. Community cooperation, timely sharing of information, and public vigilance are indispensable elements of any effective security architecture. This inclusive approach helps to foster trust between the government and the people—a crucial factor in tackling crimes that often depend on secrecy, fear, and community silence.
The Governor’s firm declaration that his administration is ready to “do all it takes” to ensure that banditry becomes history in Sokoto State reflects the presence of political will. Political will translates into decisive action, sustained funding, policy consistency, and the courage to make difficult decisions when circumstances demand. Beyond security matters, Governor Aliyu also used the SEC meeting to emphasise the importance of teamwork within government. His commendation of State Executive Council members for their unwavering support points to a cohesive administration united around shared objectives. Unity and stability within the executive arm are vital for effective governance, particularly in times of crisis when policy coherence and swift implementation are essential.
The Governor’s appreciation of the people of Sokoto State for their continued support and prayers further reflects a leadership style that values public goodwill and moral backing.
