The problem of hostel accommodation faced by students of the
Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai (IBBUL), in Niger state, may soon
become history following the construction of a multi-million naira students’
hostel.

The off-campus hostel, located close to the institution’s
permanent site, along Paiko-Lapai road, was commissioned by the vice chancellor
of the school, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare, over the weekend.

The hostel was built by the cooperative society of the
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), IBBUL Branch, at the cost of N50
million naira.

At the commissioning ceremony, Professor Maiturare stated
that most tertiary institutions across the country grapple with the challenge
of accessible and quality accommodation for students’ growing population.

He applauded the academic staff union of the institution for
embarking on the landmark project which would go a long way to complement the
school management’s effort of providing standard accommodation for both staff
and students.

“The students, who are going to occupy this beautiful and
functional lodge, must imbibe the culture of maintenance. Let them maintain the
modern facilities provided in the hostel for their own comfort and memorable

“On behalf of the management staff, I once again commend the
effort ASUU of IBBUL for putting in place this aesthetic edifice. It will
surely be gratifying, and I urge other staff unions in the university to
emulate what ASUU has done. They should embark on similar projects that will

Earlier, ASUU chairman, IBBUL, said the project was
initiated to assist the management tackle the lingering accommodation problem
faced by students, while also generating extra revenue for the university.

He disclosed that the off-campus hostel, which was named
“Academic Lodge”, is made up of 17 self-contained standard rooms and was built
at N50 million.

at this groundbreaking commissioning ceremony that our cooperative has already
embarked on building another 20 self-contained apartments. At the moment,
construction works at the lodge have reached 40 per cent completion. And very
soon, it will be due for commissioning,” the ASUU chairman said.

A cross-section of student who spoke to our reporter,
expressed delight over the commissioning of the project, and urged the
management staff to emulate the school ASUU, by building more hostels on
campus.

A 200-Level student, Mubarak Abubakar, said resuming for a
new academic session is always a nightmare for students due to the stress they
undergo looking for quality accommodation off-campus.

He urged the university to enter into Public Private
Partnership (PPP) agreement with corporate bodies, so as to facilitate the
construction of additional hostels and other critical infrastructure at the
school.

Also, a 300-Level Public Administration student, Zainab
Yahaya, called on ASUU to subsidize the amount they will charge for rooms at
the newly-built hostel, while also providing maximum security for the students
who will occupy the facility.

“The private individuals who build lodges in Lapai
town, and thereafter fix outrageous amounts on the rooms in the estates, want
to maximise profit. But IBBUL ASUU has no ground to charge exorbitant rents for
their newly-commissioned lodge. They should rather subsidise the rent for
students.”
