NECO releases 2025 SSCE results, records 60% with five credits including English and Mathematics

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the 2025 June/July Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) internal results, 54 days after the conclusion of the last written paper.
Announcing the results in Minna on Wednesday, the Registrar of the Council, Prof Ibrahim Wushishi, disclosed that out of 1,358,339 candidates who sat the examination, 818,492 — representing 60.26 per cent — obtained five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
He added that 1,144,496 candidates, or 84.26 per cent, secured five credits and above, irrespective of English and Mathematics.
He said 1,367,210 candidates registered for the examination — comprising 685,514 males and 681,696 females — while 1,358,339 eventually sat the papers.
The registrar explained that 1,622 candidates with special needs sat the examination. Among them were 586 males and 355 females with hearing impairment, 111 males and 80 females with visual impairment.
On malpractice, Wushishi revealed that 3,878 candidates were involved in irregularities in the 2025 SSCE, compared with 10,094 cases in 2024, reflecting a 61.58 per cent reduction. He further noted that 38 schools across 13 states were implicated in mass cheating and would face sanctions after due process.
Additionally, nine supervisors in Rivers, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano, and Osun States were recommended for blacklisting over poor supervision, aiding malpractice, lateness, unruly conduct, and insubordination.
Wushishi also drew attention to a communal clash in Lamorde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, which disrupted examinations in eight schools, affecting 13 subjects and 29 papers. Discussions with the state government are ongoing to reschedule the affected examinations.
He announced that NECO, in line with the reviewed national curriculum, will henceforth conduct examinations in only 38 subjects, a move expected to shorten the waiting period for results.
In the state-by-state breakdown, Kano led with 68,159 candidates (5.02 per cent) securing five credits and above, including English and Mathematics. Lagos followed with 67,007 (4.93 per cent), while Oyo placed third with 48,742. The least performing centre was Gabon, where no candidate achieved five credits including English and Mathematics.
The 2025 SSCE was conducted between Monday, 16 June and Friday, 25 July.
