Nigeria launches first drone soccer league for students

Nigeria’s youth sports and education landscape took a significant leap forward with the official launch of the Naija Drone Soccer League (NDSL), the country’s first structured competitive drone soccer league for senior secondary school students.
Announced in Abuja, the NDSL brings together e-sports, technology, and classroom learning in a format designed to prepare young Nigerians for careers in aerospace, aviation, engineering, and robotics.
The league positions drone soccer not merely as a game, but as a hands-on gateway to the skills driving tomorrow’s technology-led economies.
“Drone soccer is more than a sport — it is a training ground for the future,” the league stated at its launch. “Through this league, we are building a generation of innovators who will shape Nigeria’s future in technology, aviation, and engineering.”
The NDSL will operate as a nationwide competition, with regional qualifying rounds feeding into a national championship. Participating schools will receive drone soccer kits, technical training, and ongoing support, while teachers will benefit from dedicated capacity-building programmes.
The league also promises to open pathways for standout student-athletes to access global STEM and drone technology opportunities.

Early-registering schools are being offered priority onboarding and enhanced national visibility during the inaugural season, an incentive the organisers say reflects their commitment to rewarding pioneering institutions.
Beyond the competition floor, the NDSL envisions a broader transformation of how Nigerian schools approach science and technology education, turning classrooms into active hubs of innovation and strategic thinking.
