PBAT committed to transforming police through education — Alausa

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to transforming the Nigeria Police through targeted educational reforms, including the upgrade of the Police Academy and related institutions.
Alausa made this known on Monday in Abuja during a meeting with the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, alongside former IGP Kayode Egbetokun and other senior officers.
The discussions focused on establishing a southern campus of the Police Academy in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
According to the minister, the initiative aligns with the President’s broader agenda to strengthen internal security by improving the quality of police training and capacity development. He noted that the police deserve institutional support to perform optimally.
Key deliberations centred on infrastructure design and physical planning for the proposed campus in Abeokuta. Alausa directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) to expedite resource verification processes, with a target to commence academic activities and admit the first batch of students between September and November 2026.
The meeting also reviewed the capacity of over 42 police colleges nationwide, with plans to convert them into monotechnics.
The minister disclosed that a presidential waiver permits this transition without breaching the existing seven-year moratorium on new institutions. He added that selected institutions would be accredited to offer industry-relevant courses critical to policing and national security.
To drive implementation, three committees were constituted. The resource verification committee will be led by the NUC Executive Secretary. A second committee, chaired by DIG Isyaku Mohammed in collaboration with NBTE leadership, will focus on enhancing capacity in police colleges.
The third committee, headed by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono will oversee infrastructure development for the new campus.
Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmed, commended the initiative and assured the ministry’s full support. IGP Disu, in his remarks, emphasised that education remains central to addressing challenges within the police and enhancing national security outcomes.
