Quarrel over ₦50,000 earns man fatal necktie
A Bayelsa State High Court has sentenced one Fekala to death by hanging for strangling a woman, Kate, to death over a dispute involving ₦50,000.
Fekala was arrested in July 2022 after killing the victim and burying her corpse inside his room at Okaka, Yenagoa, an act the court ruled was both criminal and unlawful.
Justice Ineikade Eradiri dismissed the defence of insanity, provocation and self-defence, holding that the accused knew exactly what he was doing.
The court rejected pleas for a manslaughter conviction, ruling that murder admits no “discount.”
“I have no discretion,” the judge said before sentencing Fekala to death by hanging.
The parents of the deceased welcomed the judgment, saying justice had finally been served.
