Seyi Tinubu: Gov Aliyu’s patriotism misinterpreted

The decision of Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto state to name a road after son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mr Seyi Bola Tinubu, in Sokoto has ignited some outrage and controversy in Sokoto state among detractors. The move has been criticized by his detractors as an act of sycophancy, with many arguing that Seyi Tinubu has not accomplished any notable or landmark achievements or made any notable contributions to the state. Besides that, they argue that he is a non state actor who has contributed nothing to the unfolding political landscape of the North.
The road in Sokoto, previously known as “Pepsi Road,” was renamed “Seyi Ahmed Bola Tinubu Road”. People who describe the move as denigrating find no fault with the previous foreign name, “Pepsi” that has no cultural connection with Sokoto state or Nigeria. But when the same foreign name was changed to a Nigerian name, then some people suddenly came out to criticize the action. But we, progressive citizens, identify with Gov Ahmad Aliyu over this controversy. We hailed him for his courage, patriotism and nationalism.
Some interest groups childishly argue that Mr Seyi Tinubu has no notable achievements or contributions to Sokoto state or the Northern region. Not only that a road in Sokoto should be named after a notable figure from the region or a national hero, rather than someone with no direct connection to the area. Therefore, they wrongly perceive the move as an attempt to curry favor from the President or his family, rather than a decision based on Mr Seyi Tinubu’s merit or political clout.
These local champions also argue that Sokoto has a rich cultural heritage, and so naming a road after Mr Tinubu who has no ethnic ties with the Sultanate may not align with the region’s values and traditions.
The protagonists of the patriotic gesture by Gov Ahmad Aliyu should view naming a street after an individual outside of the governor’s state as an act of unity and patriotism as well as solidarity and respect for the President’s family. After all, we have Ibrahim Taiwo Road in Kaduna, we have Usmanu Dan Fodio Airport in Nasarawa state. Besides that Nasarawa has Ibrahim Abacha Road in Karu Local Government Area of the state.
Politicians in Nigeria, as in any other countries, should strive to balance representation of their states’ interests with the need to promote national cohesion, unity and development. Ethnic politics can be divisive and hinder progress, leading to polarization. Emphasizing ethnic differences can create tension and conflict among states of the states of the federation; it can distract attention from addressing pressing national issues, stalling development and progress. Such tensions can lead to violence and instability and the undermining of national security.
In the Twenty First Century, Nigerian politicians should pay greater attention to inclusive governance, representing diverse interests and promoting equality.
Recognizing individuals by state governors outside of their states of origin builds bridges across states of the federation, thus fostering dialogue and understanding among various ethnic groups. Gov Aliyu, therefore, should be praised for his political sagacity but not to be crucified for helping to portray Sokoto state as home for all. His
action prioritizes greater good over personal or ethnic interests by adopting a more inclusive and nationalistic approach.
Gov Ahmad is helping to build a more united and prosperous Nigeria, where all Nigerians stand in brotherhood irrespective of tribe and tongue, because now Seyi Tinubu will see Sokoto state as his home.
It is not out of place to describe Gov Aliyu as a budding statesman
with a clear understanding of the future he wants to create. His antecedents show that he has the ability to articulate his vision for the Sultanate without depending on the presidency because he has a strong moral principles and ethics that guide his decisions and actions. Ahmad’s patriotism has the capacity to inspire, motivate, and empower others to work towards a common national goal for political advancement and economic prosperity.
He has the emotional intelligence, self-awareness, empathy, and social skills to navigate complex political, economic and social landscapes. He has a deep love and commitment to Sokoto and his compatriots nationwide, and also a strong understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives, cultures, and beliefs of his state and cannot do anything against it’s interests.
Aliyu’s action is an indication that he is a budding statesman who possesses some leadership qualities for effective and selfless service to his country. His detribalized action will help to build strong relationships between Lagos and Sokoto states as well as North and Southwest regions. He, therefore, deserves our collective support against his critics who could not praise him for all his pro-people policies in the state, but are quick to find fault with his zeal for nationalism.
