Sokoto flood and Gov. Aliyu’s appeal to FG’s support

The recent floods in Illela and Tangaza LGAs of Sokoto State, have caused significant difficulties for residents. Many residents have been forced to leave their homes, seeking shelter in temporary camps or with relatives as the flood have damaged or destroyed homes, businesses, and infrastructure.
It has grealty affected agricultural lands, livestock and fishing which have been impacting food security and economic stability in the areas.
Stagnant water poses health hazards, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera and malaria; roads, bridges, and public facilities have been damaged or destroyed. The damages caused have not spared economic and commercial activities, causing losses for traders and artisans.
Furthermore, the disaster has caused emotional distress, anxiety, and trauma for the affected residents.
It has also led to the disruption of essential services like healthcare, education, and electricity.
The disaster has also exacerbated poverty levels, particularly among vulnerable populations.
However, Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s prompt appeal for federal government’s support and his relief efforts have alleviated these difficulties.

Gov. Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State has appealed to the Federal Government to come to the aid of flood victims in Tangaza and Illela as the two most affected local government areas in the state.
Gov Aliyu made the plea when he visited the two local government areas to assess the level of destruction caused by the devastating flood.
In Sokoto, this year’s flooding affected 22 local government areas with Tangza and Illela LGAs being the worst hit.
The destruction caused by this flood is severe that it destroyed hundreds of houses and farmlands, rendering hundreds of people homeless.
The governor appealed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assist the two LGAs with relief materials.
The call became necessary considering the immense economic importance of Tangza and Illela LGAs, which border the neigbouring Niger republic.
The Press Secretary to the Sokoto State Governent, Abubakar Bawa, in a release signed on Wednesday said Governor Aliyu called on the communities in the two LGAs to always ensure that they evacuate their drainages and avoid the indiscriminate dumping of refuse to prevent future flood disaster.
We thank Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s prompt appeal to the federal government for support in the wake of the Sokoto flood.
It’s gladening to see leaders taking proactive steps to alleviate the suffering of their constituents as Governor Aliyu issued to do.
Governor Aliyu’s administration has demonstrated a commitment to supporting flood victims, including those in Tangaza and Illela.
In fact, the Secretary to Sokoto State Government, Alhaji Bello Sifawa, recently distributed relief materials to flood-affected areas on behalf of the governor. The relief materials have indeed eased the lives of the affected communities.
Additionally, Governor Aliyu established the 2024 Sokoto State Flood Control Committee to study reports from the National Flood Early Warning System Centre and conduct on-site inspections of flood-prone areas.
This proactive approach aims to mitigate the impact of future floods.
Historically, the Federal Government has also provided support to Sokoto State during flood disasters. For instance, in 2010, President Jonathan approved a N1.75 billion grant to Sokoto and Kebbi states to assist flood victims.
Therefore, my appreciation for Governor Aliyu’s efforts is well-placed, and I’m sure we, the people of Tangaza and Illela are grateful for his leadership during this challenging and difficult times.
