Stronger, food-secure Jigawa is Gov Umar Namadi’s vision of particular concern

To say food security is important to all nations is an understatement. Therefore, in this era when food security has become one of the most pressing concerns for nations and sub-national governments, Jigawa State is quietly but decisively positioning itself as a model for agricultural transformation.
At the centre of this renewed momentum is Gov Umar A. Namadi, whose leadership continues to demonstrate that progress in agriculture is not achieved by lofty speeches but by deliberate partnerships, strategic planning, and a commitment to empowering farmers at the grassroots.
His recent engagement with the Africa Rice Centre (AfricaRice) in Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire, stands as one of the strongest proofs yet that Jigawa is on a bold journey toward becoming a powerhouse in rice production.
Gov Namadi’s decision to lead a delegation to AfricaRice was not a ceremonial visit; it was a statement of intent. By directly engaging with one of the world’s most respected research institutions in rice science, he placed Jigawa on the path of genuine transformation, one that is rooted in scientific innovation, modern farming practices, and practical support for farmers.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Jigawa State and AfricaRice is therefore far more than an administrative formality. It is a forward-looking pact designed to change the quality, quantity, and sustainability of rice production in the state.
At the heart of this agreement is a clear commitment to improving rice varieties available to Jigawa farmers. AfricaRice is renowned across the continent for developing resilient, high-yield seed varieties that thrive in different ecological zones, resist diseases, and adapt to changing climate patterns.
For Jigawa, a state blessed with vast arable land and a population deeply invested in agriculture, this partnership opens the door to seed varieties that will significantly increase output per hectare. It means higher yields, better incomes, and stronger food security for households.
But Gov Namadi’s vision goes beyond seeds. The MoU also focuses on strengthening farming methods through research-backed best practices. Modern agriculture is no longer a guessing game; it relies heavily on data, innovation, and techniques that minimise waste while maximising productivity. From soil management and water control to mechanisation and climate-smart practices, the collaboration with AfricaRice gives Jigawa access to a wealth of knowledge that will redefine farming across the state. This is the kind of strategic investment that creates lasting impact.
Another crucial component of the partnership is reducing post-harvest losses, a silent but devastating problem in Nigerian agriculture. Farmers often lose 20 to 40 percent of their harvests due to inadequate processing, poor storage, and inefficient handling. By integrating AfricaRice’s expertise into Jigawa’s agricultural system, Gov Namadi is ensuring that farmers keep more of what they grow. This alone can significantly boost household income and strengthen the food chain.
Perhaps the most commendable part of Gov Namadi’s approach is his insistence on practical, hands-on training for farmers. Too often, policies are drafted in offices far removed from the realities of the field. Namadi understands that transformation happens when farmers themselves acquire the skills that improve their work. The governor’s appreciation of Dr. Baboucarr Manneh and the AfricaRice team further demonstrates his diplomatic finesse and readiness for collaboration. In development work, relationships matter, and Gov Namadi has proven capable of building bridges that will serve Jigawa well into the future.
What makes this milestone even more remarkable is that it aligns perfectly with the administration’s broader agricultural agenda. Gov Namadi has consistently emphasised productivity, sustainability, and empowerment. From irrigation expansion and support for smallholder farmers to mechanisation initiatives and market access improvements, the administration has shown a coherent and determined strategy for agricultural growth.
Jigawa has the land, the people, and the potential to stand out as one of Nigeria’s leading rice-producing states. What it needed was leadership that understood how to convert its natural advantages into real economic value. With this new partnership, Namadi has taken a giant step in that direction. He has shown that food security is not a slogan but a responsibility, a responsibility he has embraced with clarity and resolve.
As activities roll out in the coming months, Jigawa residents can look forward to tangible improvements in their agricultural economy. More importantly, this partnership sets the stage for a future where the state becomes a hub of innovation, productivity, and self-sufficiency.
