Benue kidnap victims not UTME candidates, says JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that seven persons abducted while travelling from Makurdi to Otukpo, were not candidates for the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
Initial reports had erroneously identified the victims as candidates heading to sit for the 2026 UTME. However, later investigation by security agents suggests otherwise.
Nigeria’s security agencies have recorded a major breakthrough with the rescue of the abducted persons bringing relief to families and the public.
The victims were participants in an ongoing police recruitment exercise in Makurdi, returning to Otukpo when the incident occurred.
The clarification underscores the dangers of misinformation, particularly the rush to associate the unfortunate incident with the operations of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) without due verification.
Such premature conclusions not only mislead the public but also unfairly tarnish the reputation of institutions working to deliver on their mandates.
It is instructive that certain inconsistencies in the initial narrative were overlooked.
Given the structured nature of UTME scheduling, it is highly unlikely for candidates who know one another to be assigned the same examination centre or travel together in such a manner.
While the rescue effort is commendable, concern remains for those still in captivity, with hopes high for their safe return. Regardless of the circumstances, no Nigerian deserves to fall victim to kidnapping, and such incidents should inspire collective concern rather than misplaced blame.
The episode highlights the need for responsible information dissemination and fact-checking, especially in sensitive situations.
Public discourse must be guided by accuracy and fairness.
