Gov Aliyu’s  multi-Faceted fight against malaria scourge

Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, and Sokoto State is no exception. However, the Sokoto State Government has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to fighting this scourge through a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach.

Sokoto State government has fostered collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). These partnerships facilitate access to technical expertise, resources, and funding, bolstering the state’s malaria control efforts.

One of the most effective measures in preventing malaria is the distribution of insecticide-treated nets. The Sokoto State Government has distributed thousands of these nets to vulnerable populations, particularly pregnant women and children under five. This initiative has significantly reduced malaria transmission rates. 

To further reduce mosquito populations, the state government conducts regular indoor residual spraying  exercises. This method involves spraying insecticides on interior walls and ceilings to kill mosquitoes that come into contact with these surfaces.

Enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services is critical in combating malaria. The Sokoto State Government has upgraded healthcare facilities, trained healthcare personnel, and ensured availability of effective antimalarial medications. This enables early detection and effective treatment of malaria cases.

Raising awareness about malaria prevention and symptoms is crucial so, the state government organizes community outreach programmes, sensitization campaigns, and school-based education initiatives to educate residents on malaria prevention strategies.

The state government established the Sokoto State Malaria Elimination Programme to coordinate malaria control activities. This programme oversees the distribution of treated nets and capacity building for healthcare workers.

The Sokoto State Primary Health Care Development Agency plays a vital role in implementing malaria control programmes at the grassroots level. The agency ensures that primary healthcare centres are equipped to provide malaria diagnosis and treatment services.

The Sokoto State Government’s multi-faceted approach to combating malaria demonstrates its commitment to protecting the health and wellbeing of its citizens. Through strategic partnerships, treated nets distribution,  improved diagnostic and treatment services, community engagement, and institutional frameworks, the state is making significant strides in reducing malaria prevalence.

While challenges persist, the Sokoto State Government’s efforts serve as a model for other states in Nigeria. Continued support, coordination, and innovation will be crucial in achieving the ultimate goal of malaria elimination both in the rural and urban centres of the state.

Gov. Ahmad Aliyu described malaria as one of the major health challenges in the state and called for a stronger collaboration to stop the scourge. 

Press Secretary to Sokoto State Governent, Abubakar Bawa in a press release on Thursday said several fumigation exercises had also been carried out in the  local government areas with high cases of malaria as part of the measures to stop malaria spread in the state. 

He said Governor  Aliyu had restated his administration’s determination to support any programme geared towards making the state malaria-free, therefore, commended the Malaria Consortium for working round the clock to stop the spread of  malaria in the  state. 

The state government under Gov. Aliyu and his able team, has fostered collaborative relationships with key stakeholders in the fight against the scourge. So we must all put our hands on the deck to support our governor.
