On Gov. Umar Namadi’s exemplary leadership awards
By Musa Adamu Majia
On Friday, April 11, 2025, the spotlight once again beamed on Jigawa State, not just for its rising profile in governance and development, but for the shining example of leadership embodied by its chief executive officer, His Excellency Malam Umar Namadi.
The occasion was the prestigious Vanguard Governor of the Year Award on Good Governance 2024, organized by the Vanguard Newspaper in Lagos as part of its Personalities of the Year Awards. This remarkable recognition comes barely 24 hours after Governor Namadi was also conferred with the Governor of the Year Award by LEADERSHIP Newspapers. For the people of Jigawa State and indeed all lovers of progress across the nation, these back-to-back honours are a resounding validation of the transformative strides made under his stewardship.
To be singled out for such an award from a galaxy of other distinguished state governors is no mean feat. It is a great honour not just to the recipient, but to the people he represents. And in this case, it is a proud moment for every son and daughter of Jigawa State.

The Vanguard award is more than a plaque or a ceremony; it is a statement, a bold endorsement of Governor Namadi’s commitment to transparency, accountability, innovation, and inclusive governance.
Governor Namadi’s journey to national recognition is not one of media hype or political grandstanding. It is one rooted in results, in quiet but impactful service, in policies that prioritize the people, and in a vision that aligns governance with grassroots development.
Since assuming office, Governor Namadi has consistently championed the cause of the common man. He has anchored his administration on key pillars that include education, healthcare, agricultural development, youth empowerment, infrastructure, and digital transformation, all areas where tangible progress can be measured and felt.
The award on Good Governance is particularly symbolic. In a time when public trust in leadership is often strained, when many view governance through the prism of skepticism, this recognition sends a powerful message; that integrity, competence, and people-centred leadership still matter, and still win. Governor Namadi has demonstrated that good governance is not an abstract ideal, but a practical, measurable, and life-changing endeavour.
One of the hallmarks of his administration has been fiscal discipline and efficient resource management. Despite the limited revenue profile of Jigawa State, the governor has managed to run an administration that is forward-looking. Projects are completed without fanfare, salaries are paid promptly, and capital projects are not sacrificed on the altar of politics.
The administration’s budgetary process is inclusive, with citizens having a say in what projects matter to their communities. This participatory approach has deepened democratic culture and given people a sense of ownership over their own development.
In the education sector, Governor Namadi has made bold moves to improve school enrollment, especially for the girl-child, and to elevate the standard of teaching and learning in public schools. Investments in teacher training, school infrastructure, and instructional materials have started yielding positive outcomes. The state’s literacy rate is on the rise, and dropout rates are gradually declining, a demonstration that the policies go beyond rhetoric.
In healthcare, the administration has embarked on the revitalization of primary healthcare centres across the state, ensuring that even rural communities have access to quality medical services. The recruitment of healthcare workers, the provision of essential drugs, and improved maternal and child health initiatives have drawn praise from both local and international observers.
Perhaps nowhere is Governor Namadi’s impact more visible than in agriculture, the backbone of Jigawa’s economy. His administration has empowered thousands of smallholder farmers through improved access to inputs, mechanization, extension services, and market linkages. Under his leadership, Jigawa is steadily becoming a food basket of the nation, with rice, wheat, and sesame production seeing significant growth. The governor’s push for agro-industrialization and value addition is not just about food security; it’s about job creation and economic diversification.
Infrastructure development under Governor Namadi has been strategic and needs-driven. Roads are being constructed to link farms to markets, communities to schools and hospitals, and rural areas to urban centers. Water projects, rural electrification, and urban renewal programs are all geared toward improving the quality of life of citizens. In every sense, development is being demystified and democratized.
It is often said that a golden fish has no hiding place. Governor Namadi’s excellence has naturally drawn the attention of reputable institutions like Vanguard and Leadership newspapers, both of which independently arrived at the same conclusion: that this is a leader whose work deserves to be celebrated. The timing of the awards — within a single week — is not mere coincidence. It is the universe acknowledging diligence, consistency, and excellence.
As the accolades pour in, it is important to recognize that these awards are not endpoints, but encouragements — signposts that point to a journey well taken, and a call to do even more. Leadership is a continuous responsibility, and public expectations are always evolving. But if the past is any indication, Governor Namadi has both the temperament and the tenacity to meet and surpass those expectations.
For the people of Jigawa State, these awards should stir pride and reaffirm their faith in democratic governance. It shows that their voices matter, that their votes were not misplaced, and that their state is on the right track. It should also serve as motivation to support the governor’s developmental initiatives and hold the administration accountable in a constructive manner.
Beyond Jigawa, Governor Namadi’s recognition offers a blueprint for other leaders across the country. It shows that good governance pays, that transparency is rewarding, and that service to the people is the highest form of politics.
In a country often riddled with tales of mismanagement and poor leadership, stories like this are rays of hope. They remind us that we can get it right, and that era, has indeed, come in Jigawa State.
In all the dual recognition of Governor Namadi by Vanguard and Leadership newspapers is a momentous achievement — one that speaks volumes about his leadership style, administrative prowess, and unwavering commitment to public service. It is proof that even in a sea of challenges, integrity and innovation still shine. It is an honour that brings pride to Jigawa State and hope to Nigeria.
Governor Namadi has not only raised the bar; he has shown what is possible when leadership is driven by vision, values, and a deep love for the people.
Congratulations Your Excellency. Indeed, you are a golden fish.
